Here’s How to Compare Your Options

Welcome back to At Home with Stilig. Let’s take a closer look at finding a floor plan that works for you.

In our first At Home with Stilig post, we talked about where to begin: your budget, your location, and the things you want your home to do for you. Once those pieces begin to take shape, looking at floor plans gets a lot more interesting.

It can also get a little overwhelming.

You like the kitchen in one plan.

The bedroom arrangement in another.

And somehow you now have six favorites.

So how do you narrow it down?

Start by putting two plans side by side and looking beyond the total square footage.

Step One: Compare the Layout Before the Finishes

Cabinet colors and furniture can make a home catch your eye, but they do not tell you whether the layout is right for you. Look at the floor plan drawing alongside the photos. Pay attention to doors, windows, stairs, and how the rooms connect.

For example, Jilianne offers three bedrooms and two bathrooms on one level.

Samuel offers three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms across two stories.

Both give you three bedrooms, but the way you move through the home is different.

That is a more useful comparison than simply deciding which exterior you like best.

Step Two: Walk Through It on Paper

Imagine coming home with groceries. Trace the route from the door you would use most often to the kitchen. Where would you set your bags? Is there a convenient place for shoes and coats?

Then picture an evening at home. Someone is cooking, someone is watching television, and someone needs a quiet place to work. Follow those activities through each plan. Notice where they fit comfortably and where they might compete for the same space.

This simple exercise can help you spot questions that are easy to miss when you are only looking at room names.

Then Think About Your Furniture

If you have a dining table, sectional, or bedroom set you plan to keep, measure it. Ask about room dimensions and think about the space needed to pull out chairs, open doors, and walk around the furniture.

Windows and doorways matter here, too. A room may have enough floor space for your furniture, but fewer uninterrupted walls than you expected. Looking at those details early helps you understand how you would actually arrange the room.

Look at What the Extra Space Gives You

When one plan is larger, look for where those additional square feet go.

Is it a room you would use every day?

More storage?

A larger gathering area?

There is no single right answer. A separate office may be a priority for someone who works from home. Another household may get more use from a larger dining area. The goal is to understand what each plan gives you and whether that space earns a place on your priority list.

You Don’t Have to Choose on Your Own

Choose two or three plans and write down what you like about each one, what concerns you, and what you would want to discuss changing.

You do not need to solve those questions yourself.

Before settling on a plan, we can talk through how it relates to your homesite and overall budget. If you are considering changes, ask what is possible and how those changes could affect the project before treating them as part of the plan.

Sometimes the right starting point becomes clear when you stop looking for a home that checks every box and start identifying the boxes that matter most.

Let’s Find Your Starting Point

Have a few favorites? Bring them to the conversation. We would love to hear what you like, what you are unsure about, and how you want your next home to work for you.
